DU SOL has released detailed information on 3rd and 5th semester course structures for the academic year 2025. It is designed following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022.

The 3rd and 5th semesters are very crucial semesters for students as they need to select their DSE (Discipline-specific electives) and generic electives. Apart from they have to choose their core subjects like in every semester.

3rd Semester Subject Structure

Students who have BA Programme will have the same major and minor subjects but their syllabus and textbooks will be updated. In 3rd semester, there are two minor subjects and one major subject. Students can choose from the following subjects:

  • History, Political Science, Computer Systems
  • Intermediate Microeconomics, Plural Society (Education)
  • Romantic Literature (English), Hindi Literature
  • Medieval Indian Political Thought (Political Science)
  • Understanding Mental Disorder (Psychology)
  • Sanskrit Theatre, Study of Urdu Fiction

Students also need to select generic elective subjects like English or Hindi. There is also Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) such as Environmental Science or Hindi.

There are also Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) and Value Added Courses (VAC). You have to choose a different subject under these in every semester to increase your knowledge.

For students having Bcom Programme, their 3rd semester will have compulsory subjects like Business Statistics, Financial Management, and Principles of Management. Generic Elective subjects will include language courses and environmental students. SEC and VAC subject options are same as in BA Programme.

There is same pattern in honors and professional courses like Bcom Hons, BA Hons English, BA Hons Economics, BBA, etc. Just like the programme courses there are compulsory core subjects along with elective and skill-based courses.

In 5h semester, there are some updated subject syllabus and some structural changes. The changes are done to reduce student workload and focus on practical aspects. For example:

  • Education majors study “Teacher and Teacher Education”

  • AECC subjects are removed to streamline the curriculum

Students will be encouraged to take new subjects in each semester for their skill development. Talking about the number of subjects, there will be 6 subjects including core and elective courses.
